I applied for a West Dean textile bursary from a charitable trust for undergraduates to attend a long weekend tapestry workshop at this amazing country estate near Chichester. Caron Penney, former studio director at their Professional Tapestry Studio for 20 years, took a group of 10 students through the basic techniques of traditional tapestry. We all managed to produce a sampler selecting our own colours. My ongoing weave project, culminating in the degree show, explores combining tapestry techniques with shaft controlled loom weaving.
