Preparing for Construction

Among the many areas we explore in depth :colour, drawing, pattern, digital, design, embroidery, print, etc, etc…one of the most exciting is construction.

It is during this time that the student designers who enjoy ‘making’ the most come into their own.
Exploring and experimenting with methods of manipulations and 3D construction, they reinvent through use of contemporary materials, techniques and colour new ways in which to express their ideas for fashion and interiors.

I called in at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford yesterday to reacquaint myself with the collections and to see how we could make use of their expertise.

Fingers crossed.

Japan Visit

One of the most exciting and much sort after foreign visits the School of Art and Design organise is to Japan.
Luckily for us one of our senior lecturers, and leader of MA Design:Fashion and Textiles,Tim Parry-Williams is fluent in Japanese.Tim has lived and worked in the country and has many contacts and links which he generously shares with us.

We visit studios and designers, we visit indigo dyers and kimono makers. We of course see the architecture, galleries and museums, fashions and the most exclusive shops and tearooms.

Everyone has always enjoyed themselves thoroughly and speak highly of the planning of the trip and the country itself.

Iceland

What a great experience exploring Iceland (2014) was and what an influence the pattern, colour, texture and architecture had on the student’s work.

Well before we left the UK we collaborated on major projects with Drexel University students in the USA.
We emailed, we text,we phoned, we skyped,we communicated and we worked together on the joint projects.
Eventually we all flew into Iceland and confirmed our friendship.
Once there we came together to finalise the filming and celebrate our relationship by visiting Reykjavik Fashion Week.

New York

On the course, here in Bath,UK we are very keen to expand our visual reference and each year we look at ways to explore and immerse ourselves in a foreign culture, land or cityscapes.

Visiting New York we experienced street life, cultural heritage, studio visits and talks, fashion, art galleries, museums and architectural gems.

Here is a snapshot of some of the visual reference.

The video records the moment Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabrielle began to play as I sat down in a cafe.
Bath to New York is 3,370 miles

Looking into the future

We love building networks at Bath School of Art and Design.

Past, present and future students are encouraged to share experiences and connect with each other, even in this case before they start.

Lauren McAleer will be joining us on BA Hons Textile Design for Fashion and Interiors in Sept.

Before she does she is travelling in Asia and currently she’s in Cambodia and lovin’ it.

While away we have suggested that Lauren records the colour, pattern and imagery she sees day to day.

She’ll be set up with fresh ideas for the drawing and colour exploration we tackle from week one of the course.
It will be a fabulous comparison and contrast to what she will be studying with us.

We look forward to more exciting images from Lauren.

We are not jealous Lauren 😉

Much!

Looking forward to an exciting year.

We are always on the look out for inspiration, influence and direction.

Look at this wonderful FREE show opening in Oct at the Saatchi Gallery in London

Now we must get the students to this!

Quite some planning now to make a day of it along with this already planned to visit show at The Fashion and Textile Museum

Already an exciting year is filling out.

London Design Festival 19-28th September 2015

Although it doesn’t fall within our academic year we do encourage all our students to visit this festival.

Now with plenty of warning I share the details.

A number of large group-shows will take place across the city where new and established exhibitors from the UK and around the world will debut their designs. These ‘Design Destinations’ are crucial for designers and manufacturers wanting to reach new markets and provide excellent platforms for new and emerging designers and makers to present their products and innovations.
Two of our recently graduated students will be showing at Decorex at Sion Park

See you there
